BUCYRUS — Teresa Spears-Corder is asking for local residents to wear purple Wednesday, May 16, in honor of Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
Spears-Corder is the mom of Micah Spears, a first-grade student at Bucyrus Elementary School, who suffers from the disease.
“Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disorder that affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States,” Spears-Corder said. “It affects about 70,000 people worldwide.”
Spears-Corder said local businesses and organizations have committed to wearing purple Wednesday including Bucyrus Elementary School, Bucyrus Walmart, Norton’s Flowers, Exxon Mobile and United Bank.
“Micah’s school will also be supporting him and wearing purple on the 16th,” Spears-Corder said. “Amy Hawkins, Micah’s teacher, is having the class make get well cards to send to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.”
Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser has written a proclamation to have the month of May designated as Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
“Our team is Miracles for Micah and people can support our team by wearing purple on May 16 and post their pictures to our Facebook page,” Spears-Corder said. “Norton’s Flowers is supporting our team and taking donations at their business, located at 225 S. Sandusky Ave., in Bucyrus until Friday, May 18th.”
