GALION — Tuesday night’s Galion City Council meeting was brief, but covered a lot of ground.

A new ordinance authorizing the city to apply for a NatureWorks grant passed its first reading. Galion Mayor Tom O’Leary said the city has applied for this grant for the past three years, using it for some bathroom facility construction.

Previously, the grant had been around $19,000, but this year the amount disbursal was raised to $60,000.

O’Leary said the city was eyeing some new playground equipment for the city. He said the funds would be a good start on a commitment for a few new sets that might go in the north part of Heise Park or in East Park.

In other council business, two ordinances that introduced some guidelines to give businesses investing in Galion a tax credit for creating jobs, were pushed to their final readings and unanimously approved, with the council saying they wanted these tools in place for the city to use to entice businesses.

There was some debate about whether to add a clawback provision if a company left the city or reduced employment, but in the end the guidelines were left without amendment.

Road paving was the subject of the last piece of legislation. The mayor said this is much earlier than in previous years so the city would be able to petition for bids and get the jobs done in a timely manner with good weather. The ordinance was quickly pushed to its final reading and passed.
