GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A piece of Galion’s history will be revealed this Independence Day as the community gathers to celebrate the opening of the city’s 1976 Bicentennial Time Capsule.
The special ceremony will take place at noon on July 4, 2026, at Heise Park and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the time capsule’s placement during the nation’s Bicentennial celebration.
The event will feature patriotic music, community speakers and the first public unveiling of artifacts that have remained sealed for five decades. Organizers say the ceremony offers a unique opportunity for residents to reconnect with the people, stories and memories that helped shape Galion in 1976.
Community members are encouraged to bring picnic lunches, lawn chairs and blankets and spend the afternoon celebrating the city’s past, present and future.
The event is expected to draw former residents, families connected to the time capsule and local history enthusiasts eager to see what has been preserved for half a century.
Following the ceremony, individuals whose families have named time capsule envelopes may retrieve them from 1 to 3 p.m. at Heise Park. A second pickup opportunity will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 9 at Brownella Cottage for those unable to attend the Independence Day event.

Organizers say the opening represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to uncover artifacts and personal keepsakes left behind by residents during America’s Bicentennial year.
