ATTICA, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW) – One of Ohio’s few remaining independent fairs is celebrating a milestone this summer. The Attica Independent Fair will mark its 150th anniversary when it returns Aug. 11–15, bringing together generations of families, exhibitors, volunteers and visitors from across the region.

As one of only seven independent fairs in the state, the Attica Independent Fair has become a longstanding tradition in Seneca County and the surrounding area. Fair Board President Alan Aichholz said reaching the 150-year milestone reflects the dedication of the volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors, businesses and community members who have supported the fair through the years.

“It’s a testament to the great volunteers, exhibitors, sponsors and supporters that a small town like Attica has been able to successfully conduct an event like the Attica Fair for 150 years,” Aichholz said.

While the fair is rooted in tradition, it has continued to grow. Over the past 25 to 30 years, the fairgrounds have seen significant improvements, with several major projects completed within the last year. Those projects include a new LED sign at the main entrance, improved drainage throughout the grounds, newly paved areas near the entrance, a new porch on the Social Hall, and upgraded Wi-Fi to better support the many events held at the fairgrounds throughout the year.

Aichholz credited those improvements to the support of the community, recognizing John Bores, owner of Attica Raceway Park, maintenance professional Brandon Smith, and the many volunteers, businesses and donors who have contributed their time, talents and financial support.

The 150th fair will also feature several new attractions, including a motocross show and fireworks, along with additional improvements made since last year’s fair.

Even with those additions, many of the traditions that have made the fair a favorite for generations remain unchanged. Junior Fair exhibits, livestock shows, harness racing, the Pig Scramble and fair food continue to bring families back year after year.

The fair also gives local youth an opportunity to showcase projects they’ve spent months preparing. Exhibits include livestock, woodworking, sewing, welding, photography, cooking and artwork, highlighting the talent, dedication and work ethic of young people throughout the community.

For Aichholz, one of the most rewarding parts of the fair is watching children experience it for the first time—whether they’re meeting the animals, competing in the Pedal Pull, playing in the corn pit, enjoying the inflatables or cheering during grandstand events.

“We’re a small fair, but we’re very friendly and welcoming,” Aichholz said. “We always keep our youth—our future—at the forefront.”

Although best known for the annual fair, the fairgrounds remain active throughout the year, hosting a variety of community events that help support the organization beyond fair week.

As the Attica Independent Fair celebrates its 150th anniversary, Aichholz said the milestone belongs to everyone who has helped make the fair what it is today. From volunteers and exhibitors to sponsors, businesses and fairgoers, their continued support has ensured the tradition will carry on for future generations.
