GALION — Galion City Council made quick work of the agenda Tuesday evening, running through five pieces of legislation in less than half an hour.
In April, the Crawford County Commissioners approved a resolution for Galion to annex approximately 15 acres of land by Ohio 598 and Brandt Road, the property that used to be PECO II. Council officially accepted the land by a unanimous vote. The property is slated for development to entice new business.
In other council business, an ordinance authorizing the acceptance of a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration was passed unanimously. Safety Service Director Nicole Ward said this is the first step in the rehabilitation of the runway, including lighting.
Ward said there have been problems with lights not consistently working around the runway due to disintegrating wires, which are more than 40 years old. The legislation allows the city to hire design services for the airport update.
Ward said by the time the project is finished it will cost approximately $600,000, but the city hasn’t utilized funds for several years and that banked money will be used for the project.
At the end of the meeting, councilman Dr. Thomas Fellner thanked city crews for their quick action in Tuesday afternoon’s water main break. He said his office had a front row seat to the break and the response was near immediate.
Safety Service Director Ward said Harding Way between the square and Union Street will remain closed for the immediate future and the integrity of the road will be assessed Wednesday morning.
