BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—In an effort to strengthen community ties and enhance local safety, the Bucyrus Neighborhood Watch program is hosting an organizational meeting this Saturday, April 25, to recruit new members and revitalize its citywide presence.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at the Bucyrus Little Theater on Songer Avenue. Lead organizer Larry West says the goal is to rebuild the momentum the program held prior to the pandemic, when active blocks and community signage were staples of the local landscape.
“It’s really about that basic approach of friendliness and keeping an eye out for each other,” West said during a recent interview on Community Spotlight. “Back in the day, you couldn’t get away with anything because the neighbors were watching. Today, very few people even know who lives beside them.”
The program, originally established on a national level in 1972, encourages residents to act as the “eyes and ears” for local law enforcement. While the commitment can be as simple as getting to know one’s neighbors, West noted that the program also provides resources from the Bucyrus Police and Fire Departments for neighborhoods wishing to address specific safety concerns or host events like National Night Out.
The meeting is open to all Bucyrus residents interested in learning more about the program or starting a watch group on their own street.
