A vehicle suffered heavy damage, but no injuries were reported after a crash involving a school bus occurred in Bucyrus on Tuesday morning.

According to Bucyrus Police Lt. Kevin Wert, a 2000 Pontiac driven by Samuel Wambaa of Galion struck the rear of a Colonel Crawford Local Schools bus driven by Roger Haas, while Haas had the bus stopped at the intersection of Whetstone Street and Woodlawn Avenue.

Wambaa’s vehicle went underneath the rear of the bus causing heavy damage to the vehicle’s front end.

Haas said no students were on the bus as he was between routes. He said he was coming from dropping students off at Pioneer Career and Technology Center and going to Bucyrus First Alliance Church to pick up open-enrolled students.

Colonel Crawford Superintendent Todd Martin said other busses were used after the crash to pick up those students.

Martin said he also was relieved to find no students on the bus.

“The key is no kids were on the bus and there were no injuries,” Martin said. “We’re good. The bus can be fixed. I’m glad my driver and the other driver are both OK. Overall, it’s a good day.”

Along with the Bucyrus Police Department, Knecht’s Auto Recycling responded to the scene to handle the disabled vehicle and removing it from underneath the bus.

As a result of the crash, Wambaa was cited for assured clear distance.
