BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW) — A piece of Bucyrus history continues to shine in the heart of downtown, thanks to the community spirit behind Schines Art Park and the ongoing support of Mayor Bruce Truka.
Schines Art Park stands on the former site of the historic Schines Theater, once part of the regional Schine Circuit that brought entertainment and memorable experiences to local audiences. After the theater was destroyed by fire, community members made efforts around 2000 to restore the beloved landmark. Unfortunately, the cost of bringing the theater back proved financially impossible.
Although the theater is gone, its spirit lives on through Schines Art Park, which celebrates local artists and preserves a connection to the community’s entertainment history. Among the park’s unique features is the original projector from the former theater, serving as a reminder of the memories made there.
Keeping the park looking its best has become a personal passion for Bucyrus Mayor Bruce Truka. When organizers needed additional lighting for the upcoming Linda Friend Spooktacular, Truka stepped forward with a $600 donation to help purchase Halloween-themed lights.
His support extends beyond special events. Residents may spot the mayor working around the park or helping maintain the beauty of downtown Bucyrus. He has made it a personal mission to replace bulbs in the city’s downtown streetlamps with energy-efficient LED lighting. During the holiday season, Truka also donates the wreaths displayed at City Hall, helping bring a festive touch to the community.
The spirit of community support will be on full display during this year’s Linda Friend Spooktacular, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a free movie to follow at 7 p.m.
The family-friendly event will feature free trunk-or-treating, community activities, a chili cook-off, bicycle giveaways and a photo booth.
From preserving a piece of local history to adding festive lights and bringing neighbors together, Schines Art Park continues to be a place where Bucyrus celebrates its past while creating new memories. With the help of dedicated residents, community supporters and volunteers, the park remains a bright spot in the heart of downtown.
