NEWS RELEASE:

The City of Bucyrus has been awarded Tree City, USA status for 2018.

Mayor Jeff Reser said the award is the ultimate level that can be achieved by any community for a local tree program and is the culmination of over three years of hard work.

“The city’s administration saw the need to improve the tree canopy in Bucyrus, both for beauty and safety. City Council approved the first ever tree budget for 2017 in the amount of $24,000,” said Reser in a press release.

Reser said the very first annual Arbor Day Celebration in the city was held in April and five trees were planted in various locations. Seven additional trees were planted in Aumiller Park and two trees were planted at the Schine’s Art Park.

“The Bucyrus City Tree Board has met many times during 2017 developing a plan to make the streets of Bucyrus attractive and safe,” Reser said. “This award is a result of the hard work and dedication of the Tree Board working with the administration to make sure that Bucyrus is an attractive community for generations to come.”

Plans for 2018 include the removal of over 150 tree stumps that are eyesores in the city’s parks and tree lawns as well as taking a complete tree inventory of city streets.  The tree board also plans to plant trees on the South Sandusky Avenue corridor in anticipation of 2021 Bicentennial Celebration.

“Congratulations to all involved in making Tree City, USA a reality for Bucyrus. We are happy to be a proud recipient of Tree City, USA status,” Reser said.
