BUCYRUS — Rebecca Lutz came to the Bucyrus City Schools Board of Education meeting Thursday evening to express her opinion about the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center.
“I want to express how they have helped my kiddos,” Lutz said. “I have twin boys who have both received services from Mid-Ohio since they started school.”
Lutz said she was told that one of her twins would have to be homeschooled or sent to Fairway.
“I chose to send both kids to Bucyrus because of all the great things I had heard about the special education programs,” Lutz said. “Mid-Ohio is top-notch along with the teachers at Bucyrus Elementary School.”
Lutz said the team of teaching staff has done a great job with her sons and she wants that to continue.
“They have helped my kids achieve their goals,” she said. “When you walk into the elementary school, you cannot tell who is an employee of Bucyrus and who is from Mid-Ohio. They all work so well together as a team for our students.”
The board is considering whether the district will continue services through Mid-Ohio or opt to contract with North Central Ohio Educational Service Center. The issue will be voted on at the May board meeting.
Also in May, the board will vote on the retire-rehire of Janet Corns and Jay Dennison. Lutz said the board should rehire Corns, who is one of her children’s’ teachers, and secondary school assistant principal Kevin Fourman said Dennison has given 34 years of service to district and is a much-needed asset for students.
During the meeting, a one-year administrative contract was approved for Fourman, along with a three-year contract for Matt Henderson, director of curriculum and instruction.
A contract for interim superintendent services for June 1 through July 31 was approved for new superintendent Matthew Crispin while the resignation of current superintendent Kevin Kimmel was accepted to go into effect May 31..
A one-year contract for Rick Rawson as the district’s athletic director was approved while the resignation of head football coach, Aaron Eckert, was accepted by the board. The rehiring of educational aide Diane Kaple was also approved.
The next board meeting is May 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the board office on Plymouth Street.
