BUCYRUS — As usual, weather was the topic of discussion at the Bucyrus Elks 156 Track Invitational at Bucyrus High School on Saturday.
Wind and rain affected a more than a few events and even canceled pole vault. Though there were no meet records, all the remaining events were completed.
In the end, Oak Harbor boys won going away, 126-86, over second place Galion, while Lexington girls edged the Lady Tigers, 91.5-86.
Bucyrus boys finished third with 63 points and coach Carl Rittenour was more than pleased, considering the conditions.
“It wouldn’t be an Elks meet without bad weather,” Rittenour said. “They know they can compete in bad weather. It’s going to be here, you’ve got to do it just like everybody else.”
Galion boys got three first place finishes and four seconds on their way to second place. Colbey Fox won the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, while Braxton Tate won the 3200-meter run.
Noah Atkinson came in second in the discus for the Tigers and Jack McElligott took second in the high jump. The 4X200-meter relay team was also second and Braxton Tate was second in the 1600-meter run.
“Both groups competed well today,” Galion coach Todd Roston said. “We had some kids out today and the other kids stepped up and did a nice job for us.”
Galion girls had four firsts and two second-place finishes. Kerrigan Myers won the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump, the 4X100-meter relay team finished first and Jalyn Oswald finished first in the long jump.
Myers was second in the 200-meter dash and Anna Court took the second spot in the discus.
Bucyrus had only one first but five seconds to land in third place. Harley Robinson-Koge won the high jump and finished second in the long jump.
Tyler Bishop was second in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Zane Seybert came in second in the 100-meter dash and the 4X100-meter relay team was runner-up.
“Overall, I was pleased with our boys,” Rittenour said. “We’ve got a young team. We’ve got 40 boys this year which is better than we’ve had in a long time. A lot of them are learning but this is a good meet to start out.”
Numbers are down for the Redmen girls, but Taylor Patterson did finish second in the long jump.
Colonel Crawford girls tied Galion for second as a team and the boys were eighth.
The girls got a first-place finish from Cassidy Vogt in the 300-meter hurdles, while Liv Krassow was second in the high jump as was the 4X100-meter relay team. Julia Feik was runner-up in the shot put.
For the Eagles’ boys, Braxton James won the 800-meter run.
While Wynford girls finished 11th and the boys 10th, Royals’ coach Julie Crall was optimistic.
“Overall, times were better than we ran Tuesday,” Crall said. “So, we have another base to start with to keep pushing. The jumpers and the thrower got to see what they need to work on.”
Alizhah Watson got the only top two finishes for Wynford. Watson won the 100-meter dash and came in second in the 200-meter dash.
“It’ll come, we’ve got the talent,” Crall said. “A couple of them were upset with the way they ran today. Weather was a big factor.”
“Honestly, when we first walked in today, I didn’t think we’d have the whole thing,” Roston said. “We had all the events (except pole vault) happen. The kids did well, the kids went out and competed, so I was pleased.”
“Hopefully, our boys will build on this and have a good season this year,” Rittenour said. “I haven’t been this excited about a boys’ team in a long time because we haven’t had the boys (numbers). But now we’ve got them this year, so we’ll push each other and build on that and see what we can do.”
