BUCYRUS — Bucyrus Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke was congratulated during the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education meeting Thursday evening for his acceptance of the position as superintendent of the Mohawk School District.

Board president Dr. Paul Johnson said while the board will be sad to see Burke leave, the district, he is happy for Burke’s career advancement.

Also, in the meeting, during his report, treasurer Ryan Cook said revenue for the district is down by about two percent.

“No overall concern but something to keep an eye on,” Cook said.

Cook said the district is doing a good job in keeping expenses down.

Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said it was brought up at the athletic council meeting earlier in the day Thursday to make bowling a sport instead of a club.

“We are checking with Ridgedale to see what the increase in costs may be if we make it a sport,” Kimmel said.

Bucyrus High School junior Tod Spurlock is competing in the state bowling competition Saturday, March 2.

Several items on the agenda were approved by the board including the school calendar for the 2019-20 school year. The calendar will be available for download on the district website, www.bucyrusschools.org, by clicking on the “Calendar” link and then the “2019-2020 School Calendar” link on the right side of the page.

The board also approved makeup days for the 2018-19 school year. The district has used seven calamity days to date, requiring two makeup days that will be Thursday, March 21 and Monday, April 22.

Conferences will be at both Bucyrus Elementary School and Bucyrus Secondary School on Wednesday, March 20 in the evening and Friday, March 22 in the morning.

“Unfortunately, this year’s winter season has caused us to make the decision to use our previous scheduled makeup days,” Superintendent Kevin Kimmel said. “We will be making some adjustments to our schedule for conferences March 20 and 22 and will communicate those changes to families and the community in a timely manner.”

The board also approved an agreement with Franklin Covey to continue the Leader in Me program at Bucyrus Elementary School, as well as an agreement with North Central State College for the district’s College Credit Plus program.

Following the approval of all other agenda items, the board recessed into two separate executive sessions with no additional action being taken after the session. The first executive session was to consider the investigation of charges or complaints against a public employee and the second was to consider the employment of a public employee.

The next regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education is March 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center.
