BUCYRUS — The Bucyrus City Council’s Service Committee began a discussion regarding an increase in solid waste rates after they met during the joint council committee meetings Thursday evening.

The proposed rate hike would be 85 cents for families and 35 cents per month for single people age 62 and over. The proposal comes two days after Mayor Jeff Reser announced that a 10-percent increase for water service will go in effect for city residents July 1.

Committee chair Bruce Truka said that the committee should look at other options such as reducing the number of bags residents can place at the curb each week.

“Maybe we could cut expenses instead of increasing the rate,” Truka said.

The discussion will be continued at the next joint committee meeting June 21.

The economic development committee approved legislation to be placed before the entire council for a vote regarding the tax incentive review council recommendations along with the appointment of Dona Mohr and Hannah Jacobs to the Bucyrus Public Library Board of Trustees.

The committee also approved to contract with Poggemeyer Design Group for professional planning services to assist the city with a new community reinvestment at a cost of $7,000.

Laura McGinnis of Arcadia and Bruce Brandstetter of Brandstetter Carroll Inc updated all of the committees on the city’s first phase of the storm sewer separation project.

The next council meeting is June 19 at 7 p.m at Bucyrus City Hall.
