A transformer fire on River Street has caused a loss of power on the north side of Bucyrus.
The Bucyrus Secondary School is currently without power due along with residents in the area and Bucyrus Community Hospital.
According to a statement released by Bucyrus Police, about 8:11 am electric service in Bucyrus north of River Street was disrupted by a service line catching fire in the 300 block of River Street.
Both the school and hospital are using backup generators temporarily.
“We were told the power outage has been caused by a transformer fire on River Street and that the police and AEP are on the scene and we should be back online soon,” said Chris Stone, spokesperson for Bucyrus City Schools.
While the building is running on backup lighting, phones to the building are presently operating as normal.
An alert went out at 8:57 a.m. Friday from Bucyrus Community Hospital stating that the hospital is on generator power until power is restored within an hour.
According to Stone, American Electric Power is estimating power to be restored by approximately 9:30 a.m.
Stone said in a statement released on Facebook that all students and staff at the Bucyrus Secondary School are safe and secure.
“We will provide another update once power is restored,” Stone said.
