One week removed from the Mansfield Brass fire, commendations and a brief update were given on one of New Washington’s oldest businesses during the New Washington Village Council meeting Tuesday night.
Mayor Ben Lash commended new Fire Chief Mark Heefner for his handling of the Mansfield Brass fire.
“It probably wasn’t the way you wanted to start,” Lash quipped, “But thank you for the job you did.”
Heefner offered a brief update. They (The New Washington Fire Department) are waiting for the report from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, but nothing untoward is expected. He also confirmed that the lender’s insurance is set to take over managing the collapse of the west standing wall along the alley.
Lash added some others to his thank you list.
“Thank you to the New Washington Fire Department, New Washington Police Department, and the New Washington EMS who responded or were on call for the fire at the Mansfield Brass on Tuesday, December 13. The village stands in grateful appreciation to each department and to each individual in those departments for your commitment to the safety and well-being of the residents of New Washington. The village is also grateful to each department and individual who responded to the fire in mutual aid to the Village of New Washington.”

It was a brief meeting, with Christmas quickly approaching. Council decided to install a light at the Franklin and Swan intersection. Village Clerk Julie Cronau passed through there recently and stated that it was rather dark at that intersection. The resolution covering bridge inspections also passed its third and final reading.
Officer Nutter was on hand in the absence of Police Chief Jeff Shook. He asked that everyone keep the chief in their thoughts as his father recently passed away.
The next meeting will be 7:00 pm, January 9, 2017.
