Fall is the season for home improvements and apparently the season for scams as well. The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office has indicated it is investigating complaints by a resident pertaining to what it refers to as a “tar and chip” scam.
The Sheriff’s Office warns that there are multiple ways the scam is being operated. Scammers may offer a low quote for the work and then submit a much higher bill; they may perform shoddy work with cheap materials while charging for quality materials and work; or the individuals may represent themselves as working for a local, reputable company when they have no connection to that company at all.
The Sheriff’s Office recommends that residents check the credentials of any contractor for services and contact the Better Business Bureau for any information they may have. All suspicious activities and persons should be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
