BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Voters in Bucyrus will decide on a proposed four-year, 0.10% income tax levy on Tuesday, Nov. 3, aimed at reopening the Aumiller Park swimming pool and funding ongoing maintenance across city-owned parks.
Speaking on the paid-for Community Spotlight podcast, Fred Fischer of the Bucyrus First 2.0 political action committee explained that the pool remained closed this past season due to financing and repair issues. While Bucyrus City Council initially considered a 0.065% levy strictly for the pool in January, officials expanded the proposal to one-tenth of 1% to support all city parks, including shelters, lawn mowing, and tennis, basketball and pickleball courts.
According to Fischer, the tax equates to roughly the cost of one cup of coffee per month for a resident earning the city’s median income. If approved, the earmarked funds will pay for a $3,000 filter system for the baby pool and leak repairs in the main pool next spring. Additionally, the mayor has pledged that children of city taxpayers will be able to swim for free.
The levy would also relieve approximately $150,000 annually from the city’s general fund. City Council and the administration have committed to using those freed-up funds to purchase two new police cruisers per year to replace aging 10-year-old vehicles.
