SENECA COUNTY, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A local man wanted on felony domestic violence charges was shot and killed by law enforcement officers Tuesday morning after a traffic stop escalated into a tense standoff and an attempted escape, authorities said.

The suspect has been identified as Jeffrey R. Sergent, 43, of Bloomville, according to Seneca County Sheriff Fredrick W. Stevens.

The incident began at approximately 10:17 a.m. when a Bloomville Police Department officer and Seneca County sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull over a pickup truck driven by Sergent. Officers cornered and partially blocked the vehicle near the intersection of Township Road 8 and State Route 67, using their cruisers to trap the truck against guardrails on both sides of the roadway.

Deputies negotiated with Sergent for approximately 10 minutes, ordering him to exit the vehicle because he was under arrest for the active felony warrants.

According to Sheriff Stevens, Sergent refused to comply. During the negotiations, Sergent produced several knives from his pocket, though he remained inside the truck. He eventually rolled up his windows and stopped speaking to the officers.

As additional deputies arrived at the scene, Sergent abruptly put the pickup truck in reverse in an attempt to escape, striking a Bloomville police vehicle that was blocking him from behind. He then shifted into drive and accelerated forward.

With deputies positioned directly in front of and alongside the vehicle near the guardrails, Sergent drove toward them. Officers opened fire into the pickup truck to prevent him from running them over, Stevens said.

Sergent’s vehicle struck the front-end push bar of a deputy’s cruiser with enough force to bend the heavy metal barrier, though officers managed to move out of the path of the truck.

Deputies attempted to locate a pulse on Sergent immediately after the shooting and began emergency medical care. Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived shortly after and confirmed Sergent was deceased.

One deputy sustained a hand injury from broken glass during the incident and was treated at the scene. No other officers were reported injured.

Per standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI&I) was contacted to process the scene and head the independent investigation.

The deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the BCI investigation, Sheriff Stevens confirmed.
