Scriptures recorded the story of how Jesus fed the multitudes with a few fish and loaves of bread. Employees at ESCO are hoping they can help feed some Bucyrus boys and girls by going fishing.

Friday morning ESCO employees Amanda Furney and Al Baker presented $160 they raised from fellow employees.

“We felt this would be a good program to give the donations to because there’s a lot of people in the community that would benefit from this,” Furney said. “It wouldn’t be just be benefitting specific groups but it could help a lot of people in the community.”

The Backpack Program at Bucyrus consists of providing food for needy children by sending backpacks with food home with them on Friday.

Bucyrus City Schools Food Services General Manager Lori Pennington said donations like this from ESCO are critical to continuing the program, and that the program helped ensure kids are getting enough food and the proper nutrition.

“Receiving contributions from anybody in the community, it means a lot to our students that are in need,” Pennington said. “This kind of helps those families to be able to other things they need to do.”
The money came as a result of a fishing derby held by ESCO at the reservoir in Upper Sandusky. The money was raised from entry fees to the event and 50/50 drawing.

On hand to receive the check and representing the Backpack Program were Virginia Hammontree, Marie Stuckman, Beth Constantine and Robin Showers.

Although the Backpack Program wasn’t scheduled to resume next, Constantine said families have already contacted the Food Services Department and said they needed the food for their children as soon as possible.
