CLYDE (Crawford County Now) — It’s wasn’t easy knowing that it was the last game of the season.

For Galion, the writing was on the wall when Clyde put eight insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Clyde slammed the door on Galion’s season in a run-ruled Division IV sectional final game 14-0 at Joe Wilson Field.

“We hit the ball, we put it in play, but things just didn’t go our way,” Tigers coach Callie Bauer said. “They had two great double plays on their defense. We played hard coming into today, which is what we wanted to do.”

The eight-runs inning for the Fliers came on the strength of seven hits. Teaghan Smith lined the ball to center field to drive in Amber Dillingham and seconds later Mya Stiefel. Jayleigh Flynn scored on a wild pitch. Addy Caudill drove in Smith with a fly ball. Molly Guhn drove in Caudill and Kember Nelson on a Galion error.

“Overall we had a great performance both in the field and at the plate.” Fliers coach Marc Marshall said. “We had contributions from everyone in the lineup one through nine, and we were able to string together some runs regardless of where we were in the lineup.”

Galion (6-20) has struggled throughout the season, but the teams met earlier in the regular season. The Fliers (14-8) hosted the Tigers on April 6 and won, 9-7.

Stiefel hit a double that brought Ariah Farrar and Ember Andres to start the scoring.

During the first inning, Galion made the switch from Maddie Beck to Sarah Holt, who pitched for 3 ⅔ innings. She allowed 10 runs on eight hits (eight earned), two strikeouts and six walks. Beck allowed four runs on three hits and had one walk.

“I went with Maddie to start,” Bauer said. “It wasn’t her best. Sarah was easy. She came in and did her job. She got a lot of ground outs and fly balls, which is what she does, and spins the ball really well.”

With Holt being a sophomore, the Tigers have two more years to develop her into the pitcher it wants her to be.

Stiefel scored on a wild pitch while Flynn was at bat in the bottom of the first. Flynn tripled to center field. Flynn scored on a Galion throwing error.

Clyde scored two more in the second inning to make it 6-0.

The Tigers will graduate four seniors: Bianca White, Beck, Elliott Freyman, and Jutz. All four players have been four-year starters, and one of the hardest parts for Bauer is saying goodbye.

“I told the seniors in our huddle, they left the program better than they found it,” Bauer said. “That’s the goal. It will be a big loss for next year, and it will be hard to replace them in the lineup, but we will do what we can.”
