BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—During Tuesday’s regular council meeting, the Bucyrus City Council received a proposal to dedicate the prominent flag pole on the town square in honor of former Mayor Doug Wilson.
Wilson, who served as the city’s mayor from 1996 to 1999 and held the position of President of the Bucyrus City Council for a decade, was noted for his significant contributions to the community. Alan Young, Commander of the Col Crawford Post 181 of the American Legion, presented the request to the council, highlighting Wilson’s instrumental role in establishing the placement of the giant flag.
Young emphasized Wilson’s longstanding commitment to veterans’ causes. Wilson was a member of the Executive Committee of the American Legion Post 181 and a past commander, as well as being involved with various other veterans’ organizations.
In his address to the council, Young requested the necessary legislation to formally dedicate the flag pole to Wilson’s memory. He also announced that the American Legion would fund the purchase of a plaque to be placed at the base of the flag pole, commemorating Wilson’s legacy and dedication to the community.
The council referred the request to the Public Lands and Buildings Committee for review. Consideration of this request reflects the lasting impact Wilson had on Bucyrus and the respect he garnered from local organizations and residents alike.
