The podcast reveals a series of letters exchanged between Brown and Lillian, painting a complex picture of their relationship. The conflict appears to have stemmed from a 1924 car accident involving Brown, his wife, and Lillian, which resulted in Lillian sustaining a broken arm.
Following the accident, Brown allowed Lillian to reside in a house he owned across the street from his own residence, Brownella Cottage. However, in 1928, Brown requested Lillian vacate the property, citing “irreconcilable incompatibility.” This decision, outlined in a formal letter, appears to have strained the relationship significantly.
Lillian subsequently wrote to Brown in 1930, pleading for financial assistance after her husband abandoned her and left her in dire financial straits. She attributed her difficulties, in part, to the loss of the house and the lingering effects of her injuries sustained in the car accident.
Brown’s response was surprisingly firm. He denied any responsibility for Lillian’s situation and even requested she sign a document absolving him of any obligation arising from the accident or the previous living arrangement.
