MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital is taking part in National Lung Cancer Screening Day to help save lives by increasing awareness of lung cancer across our communities. Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and early detection offers the best chance for a cure.

Mansfield Hospital is offering screenings from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 9. To schedule a screening, patients must obtain an order from their physician. Once the order is submitted, patients may call 419-526-8333 to schedule an appointment. This screening exam is covered by most insurance carriers.

“Low dose lung cancer screening CT scans are a vital early detection tool for lung cancers,” said Sarah Morgan, MD, pulmonologist at Mansfield Hospital. “If caught early with this screening tool, many of these cancers can be effectively cured with surgery. It is so important to find these cancers before they spread, given that lung cancers remain some of the most lethal cancers and have such a significant impact on this community.”

According to the Richland County Cancer Profile, lung cancer continues to be the most common cancer in Richland County. It is also the deadliest. More than a quarter of all cancer deaths in Richland County from 2016-2020 were caused by lung cancer.

“Early detection saves lives and we are lucky at OhioHealth Mansfield to have the ability to provide these screenings year-round, not just on Lung Cancer Screening Day,” said Dr. Morgan. “I would encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible or have a friend or family member that is eligible to take this opportunity to reach out. A simple CT scan could save a life.”

According to Dr. Morgan, anyone between the ages of 50 and 80 and those who’ve smoked a significant amount of tobacco products within the last 15 years should reach out and see if they’re eligible for this screening exam. Ongoing screening is recommended every 12 months after the initial screening scan.
