BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Takiyah Wright, 27, of Bucyrus, appeared via video in the Crawford County Municipal Court to face charges of Drug possession and child endangering.
Crawford County Prosecutor Thomas Meagher outlined a horrific scenario related to the current charges for Judge Shane Leuthold.
According to Meagher, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call yesterday saying that a two-month-old baby was unresponsive.
The Bucyrus Fire Department, Bucyrus Police Department, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Detective Tyler Winkelman responded to the scene in the 1000 block of Bucyrus Street.
Winkelman then called Sheriff Scott Kent to the scene.
Meagher told the court that there were no visible injuries to the baby boy who was wearing a sleeper and a diaper.
Detective Winkelman took Wright through the events that led up to her discovery of her son.
Wright, who was said to be visibly upset, told Winkelman that she woke up between 4 and 6 am to feed the baby which was his normal schedule. Wright said she laid back down between 9 and 10 am putting the baby in a jumper beside her bed.
In a later interrogation, Wright said the baby was not in the jumper but was lying beside her in the bed.
She told police she was awakened by Phillip Gallant around 2 pm.
Wright rents a room from Gallant. Wright said she observed blood coming from the child’s nose. She then called 911.
When asked if she would fail a drug test, she indicated she would fail. When tested at the jail by the adult parole authority, Wright tested positive for amphetamines, Methamphetamines, oxycodone, and marijuana.
Wright gave authorities permission to search her residence where they found syringes, used and unused but loaded with suspected meth, meth pipes, and baggies with what appeared to be drug residue. Those items were field tested and showed preliminary positive for methamphetamines. They are being tested further.
Meagher told the court that Wright has extensive drug convictions and has done prison time.
Judge Shane Leuthold remembered Wright from her interactions in his court. “this is the part, as I sit here today, that saddens me greatly because I gave you the opportunity to go to in-house treatment to get off all these dangerous drugs.” Leuthold said.
Leuthold noted that she chose to sit out her time in jail so she wouldn’t be on community control.
Wright argued with Leuthold and told him the court had never offered her any in-house drug treatment.
Leuthold checked with his bailiff who confirmed his recollection. Leuthold told Wright he planned to go back and check the records, but he remained certain he had given her that option.
Wright continued to speak as the Judge admonished her to say no more until she had spoken to an attorney.
Leuthold went on to say: “we’ve given you the opportunity to get clean to fix this drug problem. If the state’s allegations are accurate, you were laid up in a 6 x 10 room using drugs of various and different sorts.
You tested positive at the jail for meth, methamphetamines, oxycodone and marijuana. You are a terrible drug addict. You’ve been a terrible drug addict for years and now your baby is dead.
At the least, you were up all night doing drugs and then you were sleeping all day. By your own admission, Mr. Gallant had to come wake you up.
If the evidence turns out as it looks, your baby is lying next to you deceased and you can’t get up because you’re up all night using drugs.” Leuthold said.
In a shocking response, Wright told Judge Leuthold: “I take care of my fuc$&?g baby every day!”
With that comment, Leuthold held her in direct contempt of the court.
He followed the state’s recommendation for a $250,000 cash or surety bond. He appointed attorney Andrew Motter to represent her.
“Get her out of here!” Leuthold ordered deputies.
The infant is undergoing an autopsy at the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.
According to Prosecutor Meagher, the exact cause of the infant’s death is not yet known.
Wright’s case will be presented to the Crawford County Grand Jury. Additional charges are possible pending the outcome of the baby’s autopsy.
