BUCYRUS / GALION / ONTARIO (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Three registered nurses from Avita Health System have been recognized with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®. This award is a testament to the extraordinary, compassionate care these nurses provide to patients and their families every day.

The 2024 DAISY Award recipients are Patricia Hook, RN of Bucyrus Hospital, Erin Postell, RN of Galion Hospital, and Tori Hoffman, RN of Ontario Hospital. These nurses have shown exceptional dedication and compassion in their care for patients, earning them this prestigious recognition.

Patricia Hook was lauded for her empathetic care in the intensive care unit at Bucyrus Hospital. She was nominated by a patient’s daughter who praised her for her understanding and patience with her dementia-stricken father. Hook’s care extended beyond her patient, ensuring that the patient’s wife was also taken care of during this challenging time.

Erin Postell, serving in the medical/surgical unit at Galion Hospital, was nominated for her thoughtful and compassionate care for a patient with pancreatic cancer. Recognizing the importance of family during such a critical time, Postell delayed administering pain medication to allow the patient to say goodbye to her children.

Tori Hoffman, working in the intensive care unit at Ontario Hospital, was commended for her thorough and compassionate care. Nominated by a patient’s loved ones, Hoffman was praised for her dedication to patient comfort and her ability to provide clear and comprehensive updates on the patient’s care plan.

The DAISY Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The foundation’s mission is to thank nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Kathy Durflinger, Chief Nursing Officer at Avita Health System, said, “The DAISY Foundation DAISY Award is our highest honor for nurses who provide extraordinary care and these three nurses are very deserving. This year, there were 66 nurses nominated for this award which speaks to the quality of the nurses at Avita.”

Nurses at Avita Health System can be nominated for the DAISY Award by patients, families, and colleagues. The award recipients are chosen anonymously by a committee of Avita employees and community members based on specific criteria and scoring for each nomination. Awards are presented twice annually at celebrations attended by the honoree’s colleagues, patients, and visitors.

At the award ceremonies, Patricia, Erin, and Tori each received a certificate commending them for extraordinary nursing. Each honoree was pinned with a special DAISY Award Pin and presented with a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.
