BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A telecommunications harassment complaint led to an assault investigation and an hours-long barricade situation Sunday night before a Bucyrus man surrendered peacefully to police early Monday morning.
According to the Bucyrus Police Department, officers were dispatched to Bucyrus Plaza at approximately 8:52 p.m. Aug. 30 in response to a telecommunications harassment complaint.
When officers arrived, they contacted the reporting party and began an investigation. During that investigation, officers determined an assault had occurred and identified the male suspect as Jason Gutierrez.
Police said Gutierrez was already out on bond from a prior domestic violence incident involving the same victim.
Officers later went to Gutierrez’s apartment in the 100 block of East Mary Street in an attempt to take him into custody. Police said officers could see Gutierrez inside the residence, but he refused to respond to officers or leave the apartment.
Because of his contact with the victim, Gutierrez’s bond was revoked, and officers were required to take him into custody, according to the police department.
The situation then developed into a barricade incident as officers worked to safely resolve the standoff.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted Bucyrus officers at the scene, and a perimeter was established around the residence while officers obtained a search warrant.
Once the warrant was secured, members of the Crawford County Special Response Team responded to assist.
Police said chemical agents were deployed into the residence in an effort to gain Gutierrez’s compliance and bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
After several hours, Gutierrez surrendered peacefully at approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday and was taken into custody without further incident.
The incident was resolved without any reported injuries to officers, Gutierrez or members of the public.
The arrest followed an investigation that began with a complaint at Bucyrus Plaza and ultimately required assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies and the Crawford County SRT.
Police said additional charges related to the incident remain subject to the ongoing investigation and review by the Crawford County Prosecutor’s Office.
The Bucyrus Police Department did not report additional details about the alleged assault or the circumstances surrounding the original complaint.
For residents, the overnight incident concluded without reported injuries, after officers spent several hours working to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
