The Crawford Park District brought back its Earth Day Celebration on Saturday and knocked it out of the park. Over 250 people attended the event at Lowe-Volk Park which included fun freebie giveaways, crafts, displays and educational activities.

Christina Kuchle is the Northwest Ohio Scenic River manager for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and discussed what she was able to share with those who stopped by her exhibit.

“This Conservation Earth Day has been an excellent opportunity to show people some of the organisms that live in our rivers. Planting trees are really important for water conservation, the conservation of our drinking water resources,” Kuchle said. “ It’s been a lot of fun, I’ve really enjoyed showing people crane fly larvae, what they look like and that they are okay to hold and pick up or Sal bugs. It’s just been an absolute delight and a gorgeous day.”

Colonel Crawford fourth graders created recycling projects that will be on display at Lowe-Volk Park throughout the week. Students from the fifth grade chipped in with Earth Day posters.

Several local business also had a hand in making visitors feel welcome. The Amish Vault brought in recycled furniture that 90% of the furniture was recycled. GEN Rubber gave away coasters. The Natives of Harmony donated Prairie Plants for sale from Marengo.

Among the giveaways were trees. The saplings handed out included several species such as white pine, blue spruce, black walnut and pecan.
