BUCYRUS — Vicki Dishon, a resident of Bucyrus and a Republican candidate for Bucyrus Council-At-Large, voiced her opinion during the city council meeting on Tuesday, proposing that the city should discontinue offering free police protection and cleanup services during and after the Bratwurst Festival. Dishon believes that this move would save the city an estimated $15,000.

According to a 2021 agreement with the Bratwurst Festival, a one-year advance notice must be provided to the Festival Board before any modifications can be made to the existing agreement.

Due to the city’s financial situation, Dishon requested that the one-year notice be given prior to the 2023 Bratwurst Festival, allowing the incoming 2023-2024 council to decide on any changes to the agreement.

Notably, Kevin Myers, the Director of the Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival, currently holds a position on the council.

However, Mayor Jeff Reser expressed opposition to the suggestion, highlighting the current agreement as a “win-win” situation for the city. Reser emphasized that the festival brings numerous visitors to town and is closely associated with Bucyrus. He further mentioned that the arrangement enables local groups to afford participating in the event.

The proposal did not progress any further during the council meeting.

In other matters discussed during the council meeting, concerns about electric-powered vehicles were raised. Mayor Reser informed the council about the growing usage of these vehicles and suggested that citizens should be educated about the laws governing their operation. Reser highlighted the need for people to be aware of potential legal violations they might unknowingly commit. As a solution, Reser proposed adding a notice in utility bills to ensure that individuals have a clear understanding of the relevant laws.

The council did not take any immediate action on this matter.
