CRAWFORD COUNTY―The Crawford Park District is excited to announce two upcoming events for nature enthusiasts and curious individuals alike. On Saturday, April 8, the district will host an Artifact Hunt and a Face to Face event featuring Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches at Lowe-Volk Park.

The Artifact Hunt event invites participants to join other artifact collectors on a walk through nearby farm fields, searching for remnants of pre-historic cultures that once inhabited Crawford County. The event is popular among history enthusiasts and offers the unique opportunity to be the first human to touch an artifact since it was used thousands of years ago. Families are welcome to attend, and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear boots if the ground is wet. Walking sticks may also be helpful. The group will meet at 10am at Lowe-Volk Park, located at 2401 State Route 598, three miles north of US Route 30.

Later in the afternoon, the Face to Face event will feature a meet-and-greet with Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, led by Crawford Park District Naturalist, Chelsea. Participants will learn about these intriguing insects and how they produce their distinctive hissing sounds. There will be opportunities to touch and/or hold the cockroaches, and attendees will even have the chance to watch as Simon, the park’s bearded dragon, devours a few of the roaches. The event will begin at 2pm at Lowe-Volk Park.
