COLUMBUS—Just hours after releasing a new license plate design unveiled by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the Ohio Department of Safety assures aviation and history enthusiasts that the design has been corrected.
The last license plate released was the “Ohio Pride” plate introduced in 2013.
“We wanted Ohio’s new license plate to reflect the heart and soul of our state and to encapsulate where we’ve been, who we are, and where we’re going,” said Gov. DeWine. “The imagery on our new license plate symbolizes what makes Ohio beautiful, unique, and extraordinary.” Said Gov. DeWine.
The plate features the Wright Brothers’ first powered aircraft along with a banner flown with Ohio’s tag line “The Birthplace Of Aviation.”
The problem was that the banner was attached to the nose of the plane and not the tail. Keen observers on social media caught the error. The Ohio Department of Public Safety issued a statement:
“We are aware that the plane on the new Ohio license plate unveiled this morning was oriented in the wrong direction,” The Ohio BMV said in a statement. “We regret this mistake and have fixed the image.”
The new license plate will be available for purchase by the end of the year.
