NEW WASHINGTON — For freshman Spencer Miller, the game is certainly not too big.
The Wynford right-hander tossed a perfect game for four innings until Buckeye Central pinch hitter Lane Bauer singled to open the fifth.
From there, Miller fired a nifty five-hitter and got 13 hits from his teammates as the Royals downed the Bucks, 18-2, Wednesday afternoon.
The win improved the Royals to 4-0 in the Northern 10 Conference, 4-2 overall, staying in a first-place tie with Colonel Crawford. Buckeye Central fell to 0-4, 0-8 overall.
Wynford coach Tom Smith said he is not surprised about what Miller has done so far.
“Spencer has been throwing strikes all year,” Smith said. “That’s the main thing. He kept the ball in the zone, and I don’t think he walked a batter. He had only 35 pitches through four innings and we made a few errors there in the fifth and made him go seven.
“He’s a gamer,” Smith added. “He comes out and he is serious. He’s always focused in. We know he’s going to give us his best effort every game.”
Buckeye Central coach Chad Jensen said that his team put the ball in play but the Wynford defense was very good behind Miller.
“(Miller) kept us off-balance,” Jensen said. “I thought we were a little impatient on him. We needed to be a little bit more patient. To his credit, he threw a lot of strikes and we kept hitting it at people. I thought we made contact and put the ball in play, but they did a great job defensively. We just couldn’t find any holes until later.”
Miller struck out four and did not walk a batter.
The Royals got to BC starter Elliot Geissman early, scoring five times in the second.
The big blow of the inning was a bases-loaded double off the bat of nine hitter Sam Collene and all three runners scored. Cody Taylor and Grant McGuire each added RBI.
Wynford scored five more in the third off Bucks’ reliever Clay Green.
Zach Harer singled in a run and Dylon Robinson and Collene each added an RBI on walks. Leyton Appleby and Taylor each had batted in one.
“We’re hitting the ball well,” Smith said of his team. “We took a big loss yesterday, but we still hit the ball well. We’ve been hitting the ball well all week, about the last four games.
“Buckeye Central is not a bad team,” he added. “And we played our best two games against them. They’re actually a pretty solid team and we came in and hit in both games against them. We’re coming around.”
Buckeye scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Green and a Wynford error.
The Royals scored seven more times in the seventh. Robinson, Collene, Avery Langenderfer, and Taylor batted in runs.
Buckeye Central got five hits in the final three innings, something Jensen said has been the case most of the season.
“This is the way it has been for us all year,” Jensen said. “We haven’t struck out very much. We’ve put the ball in play, but it seems like we hit it right at people. All year long, we’ve been snakebit. We keep hitting the ball and hitting it right at people. And that’s what we did tonight.
“(Wynford) fielded it,” Jensen added. “They did a great job. They played good defense behind him. I told our kids that our time will come. I’d be more upset if we were striking out 15 times a game, but we are putting the ball in play.”
