For fun in the summer sun, anyone in the area can head to Aumiller Park in Bucyrus to enjoy the pool or the playground; and when appetites get worked up, there’s Delectables, the concession stand with more behind the counter than just treats.
Last year, the Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities took control of the concession stand at the park and began to use it as a training site for individuals with developmental disabilities with the goal of teaching them how to work with money, develop people skills, cleaning, and more. Anything and everything that has to do with a concession stand is taught in the hopes of those individuals then going into the community and being able to take those skills to another job.
Delectables, which boasts a fresh paint job and an option for park-side service as opposed to only poolside, is run by job coaches who bring the individuals alongside them in the daily operations.
Taylor Graham is one such job coach, in addition to being a manager, and has been with Delectables since it first came into being. Graham, who applied for the job alongside four other college students after hearing about it through a teaching post website, really enjoys witnessing the progress of the people that she works with.
“I can tell, just from a month of the individuals being here for our summer program,” Graham said, “that they’ve all made huge improvements already, which is really exciting.”
Delectables is open every day of the week from 11 am-8 pm and features a wide variety of both food and valuable experiences.
