MANSFIELD, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A 16-year-old Mansfield teenager is facing multiple felony charges, including murder, in connection with the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Elias Uzuoff early Tuesday morning in Springfield Township.
The suspect, who was arraigned in Richland County Juvenile Court on Wednesday, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is currently being held at the Richland County Juvenile Detention Center.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence at 1040 Lexington-Ontario Road at 12:29 a.m. on August 11 following reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, first responders found Uzuoff suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital by the Springfield Township Fire Department but later died from his injuries.
Sheriff J. Steve Sheldon stated that the incident stemmed from a confrontation at the residence. Investigators believe the suspect, who is the ex-boyfriend of a girl living at the home, was attempting to force entry when he encountered Uzuoff, the girl’s current boyfriend. A fight subsequently broke out between the two.
In addition to one count of murder and two counts of aggravated murder, the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office has charged the teenager with:
* Aggravated burglary (first-degree felony)
* Two counts of felonious assault (second-degree felonies)
* Trespass in a habitation (fourth-degree felony)
Several of these charges include a “serious youthful offender” (SYO) specification. Under the Ohio Revised Code, an SYO designation allows a juvenile court judge to impose a blended sentence, combining a juvenile disposition with a stayed adult prison term.
The prosecutor’s office has also filed a motion for a mandatory bindover, a legal procedure that could move the case to adult court.
