MANSFIELD — A fatal crash on U.S. 30 that resulted in two deaths in under investigation by the Mansfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
According to information released by the OSHP, emergency crews responded to U.S. 30 near milepost 1 in Richland County near the county line with Crawford County at approximately 3:55 p.m.
According to the report, a 2008 silver Pontiac G6 driven by 21-year-old Hailey Thompson of Mount Gilead was traveling eastbound on U.S. 30 when the vehicle was driven across the median and into the patch of a westbound 2007 red Nissan Versa driven by 18-year-old Alyssa Pine of Bloomville.
The Nissan reportedly became disabled on the roadway and the Pontiac overturned and came to a stop in the right-side ditch of the westbound lanes.
Both Thompson and Pine were pronounced dead on the scene. Thompson was not wearing a seatbelt.
The Nissan had three passengers identified as 19-year-old Kale Herschler of Bucyrus, 18-year-old Layne Vanderpool and 18-year-old Leah Vanderpool, both of New Washington. Herschler was flown by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus and Layne and Leah Vanderpool both were transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. All three passengers’’ injuries were considered life-threatening.
No alcohol or drug use is suspected to a factor in the crash.
U.S. 30 was closed to traffic for approximately three hours.
Other agencies that responded to the scene included Springfield Township Fire and EMS, the Ontario Police Department, Crestline fire and police departments, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Highway Patrol Commercial Units, the Crawford and Richland counties coroner offices and Valley Towing.
