BUCYRUS — The quick thinking of a juvenile boy led to a Bucyrus home sustaining minimal damage in a fire.
The Bucyrus Fire Department responded to the 1500 block of Linwood Drive on Thursday at approximately 9 a.m. on a report of an electrical fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire had occurred in an electrical outlet in the residence. The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.
According to BFD, a young juvenile boy who was home at the time of the fire saw flames coming from the outlet, shut the house’s electricity off at the residence’s breaker box and exited the structure.
The boy then called 911.
“He did absolutely everything right,” BFD Lt. Casey Gillen said.
Firefighters investigated the residence and could reportedly smell a faint odor of electrical burning. Initial reports point to an electrical short in the outlet, but the matter remains under investigation.
Damage was contained to the outlet and a battery charger.
The actions of the boy are believed to have saved the home from greater damage, Gillen said.
