BUCYRUS — A local business owner saw a need for more security on Washington Square and put a solution into action.
Kurt Fankhauser, owner of Wavelinc Communications, made a proposal to the local Projects, Inc. board to install cameras for Millennium Park.
“After the head of Colonel Crawford was stolen from the front of the courthouse, I started checking into the need for cameras in that area,” Fankhauser said.
According to Lisa Workman of the Foundation for Crawford County, Fankhauser’s gesture is much appreciated.
“It was in-kind gift to Projects, Inc. and a generous gesture,” Workman said.
Workman said the cameras add security by providing surveillance and there is an added bonus.
“Internet service through free Wi-fi is also now available in Millennium Park,” Workman said.
Fankhauser said the cameras need internet access to operate.
“So, when I was installing the internet for the cameras, I thought it would be nice for citizens and visitors to that area to be able to enjoy internet access while they are there,” Fankhauser said.
Workman said Millennium Park and its mural and fountain are confusing to many people.
“Many think it is owned by the city or the foundation, but it’s neither,” Workman said. “They are owned by Projects, Inc., a support organization of the foundation who is its own non-profit entity. The park area is maintained and cleaned by volunteers, other than some landscaping that is paid for and occasional repair work beyond the scope of our volunteers.”
