COLUMBUS (Crawford County Now) — A year ago, Buckeye Central junior Collin Perry was closer to 12 seconds in the 100-meter dash than he was to state.

On Friday evening, the second day of the OHSAA Jesse Owens State Track and Field Championships, he became just the second athlete in program history to place in three events.

“It really means a lot,” Perry said. “I worked my butt off to get here, I gave it everything, and the results showed.

“From running 11.8 and not making regionals in anything to dropping all the way down to almost a 10 in the hundred, it just feels great. And I’m almost two feet better than last year in the long jump. It just feels amazing.”

Perry jumped 22-6 on Thursday to place third in the long jump and followed it up with fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.39 in -3.1 m/s headwind) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.90 in -2.5 m/s headwind).

Before him, Dan Wurm was the last to do it, winning state titles in the 110-meter hurdles and with the 4×100, and a runner-up finish with the 4×400.

Pirnstill third in pole vault

Bucyrus sophomore Ivan Pirnstill took his place above the “3” after breaking his own school record in the pole vault clearing 14-8 clean. He then missed all three attempts at 15-0.

“It’s a really big day,” Pirnstill said. “I had a good day, came out good, jumped good, everything went well. I’ve worked for this since eighth grade, three times a week, it really showed out today.”

A year ago, he didn’t even make it to the second weekend of the postseason.

“Last year I was already thinking I was going to go to state, then I ended up getting knocked out at districts,” Pirnstill said. “This year, I’ve just been taking it a little bit at a time … I’ve been more in the present instead of (thinking about) the future.”

It was the best finish the Redmen have had in pole vault since the late Mike Pensinger won a Class AA state title in 1971, and the highest anyone has placed since Sarah Henize won the 800-meter run in 2004.

“He had his best day on the day he needed it,” Bucyrus vault coach Dave Jones said. “He’s got huge upside, but nobody puts in more work than him. He has earned everything he has received at this point — the future is bright.”

Boggs fourth in 3200

Karter Boggs took fourth place in the 3200 meters, clocking 9:36.02. He added an 11th-place finish in the 1600 at 4:27.41.

“I wanted to win; everybody wants to win. But I never qualified for the two mile before, so the fact I got here and placed fourth speaks volumes of my fitness,” the Bucyrus senior said.

On racing in the heat, Boggs added, “I got here six hours before I raced, which definitely played a role. But I can’t be mad with how the race went … I grew a lot as a runner this year, I finally have a really strong kick when I need it.”

Powers eighth in 300 hurdles

Avery Powers of Colonel Crawford placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles. His time of 43.82 was the result of a stumble on the third to last hurdle.

“It feels good, but it’s a little frustrating how it happened and the time I ran. But I got lucky because the kid in Lane 9 (was disqualified).

Prior to the miscue, “I felt like I was running really good, and felt like I was in a really good position. Then on the last straight it started falling apart … I think the wind just got the best of me.”

Crawford relays place

The 4X200 relay of Powers, John DeGray, Roen Thew and Jacob Cochran ran fourth in 1:29.77.

“It feels great, it’s everything we worked for,” Thew said.

Cochran on ending his track career on the podium twice:

“It means a lot. This is the first year I’ve had a lot of guys around me that can push me. I would not be where I am without these guys, I’m super proud of all of them and excited to see what they can do next year.”

DeGray added, “Our coaches say it, everybody says it — it’s the best race of the meet. It’s at the end, most people don’t want to be there, but guys like us do. We want to be there and compete.

“We want to come out on top, today we didn’t like we wanted to, but all these other guys are great athletes like us. Next year, we’re gonna go and chase it again.”

The foursome took seventh in the 4X400 in 3:26.72.

  • Dom Dean placed ninth in the shot put and Luke Christman also took ninth in the discus.

Dean had a personal best of 53-feet, 3 inches. Christman hit 156-3 on his throw.

  • Emmi Powers finished 12th in the high jump at 5 feet.
  • Cami Roston was 18th in the pole vault at 10 feet.

Arthur gets all-Ohio twice

Galion’s Shaun Arthur threw a PR of 12-10.25 to place eighth in the seated shot put.

On achieving his goal of All-Ohio he said, “It’s really cool, but I want to do better. I think I can do better. My goal was 14, but not today.”

He added a seventh-place finish in the seated 100 meters in 34.81.
