CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS (Crawford County Now) — Colonel Crawford’s Cami Roston is following in her older sister’s footsteps.

So it was fitting that Gabby was at Cuyahoga Heights High School helping her freshman protégé at the Division V regional meet. Cami would finish fourth in the pole vault clearing 10-0 on her first try before missing all three attempts at 10-4.

“It means a lot, I look up to Gabby, so it’s exciting,” she said. “It means a lot to have her here because she was so good in high school. Her word actually matters.”

She was one of just two Lady Eagles athletes to qualify for the state meet as sophomore Emmi Powers placed fifth in the high jump (5-0) on Thursday to secure the final automatic berth by virtue of a jump off with McDonald’s Halle Kuntz.

The area will be well-represented by the boys, however, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium next weekend.

Competing at the Fostoria regional due to an imbalance of boys and girls teams in the Northwest District, Bucyrus’ Karter Boggs led the way as the only regional champion nabbing first place in the 1600-meter run with a new school-record time of 4:22.92. He was also regional runner-up in the 3200 (9:29.79) breaking his own record again by five seconds. Teammate Ivan Pirnstill will join him after a third-place finish in the pole vault (14-0), as will 10 others from Crawford County.

Buckeye Central’s Collin Perry was third in the 100-meter dash (11.27), fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.65), and eighth in the long jump (21-6¼) earning an at-large bid in the latter, while Crestline’s Colten Keller placed fourth in the 800-meter run (1:57.84). It will be a first trip for both to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Colonel Crawford sends the largest group including a trio of relays in the third place 4×200 (Avery Powers, John DeGray, Roen Thew, Hayden Spears), sixth place 4×100 (Spears, Powers, Thew, Kipton Cass), and seventh place 4×400 (Powers, DeGray, Thew, Jacob Cochran). Powers also qualified automatically in the 300-meter hurdles placing third (39.25), while Dom Dean in shot put and Luke Christman in discus nabbed at-large bids both finishing sixth in their respective events.
