BUCYRUS (Crawford County Now) — Oak Harbor swept the Bucyrus Elks Invitational track and field meet here Saturday. The hosts finished sixth in boys and ninth in girls.
Wynford took eighth in both divisions. Mount Gilead’s girls placed second, edging out Marion Harding, in the 12-schools event.
Redmen senior Karter Boggs claimed first in the 1600 meters in 4:30.20 and placed second in the 3200 meters in 10:21.18.
Bucyrus head coach Kevin Boggs said keeping an eye on the weather forecast has become common for this early spring meet.
“We were watching and with all the rain this week … and the tornado warnings last night. We were very thankful it kind of got through; and we cleaned up the mud and stuff.”
Sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s produced good times overall.
“We got about three kids nursing injuries,” Boggs said. “We don’t want to push them too hard this early. We got some young guys competing. Tyson Beck has been super busy and Micah Spears. They’re freshmen racing against upper classmen.”
Ella Green took second in the girls 800 meters in 2:41.26. Sophomore Ivan Pirnstill took second in the long jump at 19 feet, 2.5 inches, and second in the pole vault at 13-6.
Peyton Fackler got fifth in the long jump at 14 feet, 5 inches, and seventh in the 100 meters at 14.58.
“Karter came in with the mindset that he wanted to win the mile. He’s feeling pretty strong and healthy and will continue. Ella had a great kick and had been a sprinter. We converted her over to the mile and she’s responded real well,” Boggs said.
“Ivan has put in a lot of time on the pole vault, and he has some serious goals about making it down to Columbus.
“Oak Harbor, Waynedale and Mount Gilead are good programs. This is one of the harder invitationals we go to. We ran decent times, but we’ve got work to do.”
Dustin Feck got seventh in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.67. Savannah Clark got seventh in both shot put (29-1.25) and discus (87-2).
Royals sophomore Megan Young took third in the 200, clocking 28.98. She took fifth place in the 400 in 1:05.86. Classmate Karsyn Pollock finished the 800 meters in 2:50.61.
