ATTICA – A Norfolk Southern train derailed Monday night in Seneca County near Republic, closing the crossing in Chatfield for several hours.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. about 10 miles south of Bellevue.

According to Jonathan Glass of Norfolk Southern, the train was heading westbound on the tracks and was hauling shipping containers that held consumer goods.

No hazardous materials were involved. Since the derailment happened in a rural area, there were no injuries or impact on the public in general.

According to Norfolk Southern the train consisted of three locomotives and 53 rail cars and was en route to Chicago. The train was 10,284 feet long and weighed 11,723 tons.

The cause of the derailment had not yet been determined and railroad officials were at the scene along with a slew of heavy equipment machinery to remove the cars from the area.
