BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Smith Acres Produce, a small, family operated business that provides seasonal, locally grown produce and other food products, was recently selected by the Crawford County Board of Health as the 2024 Public Health Partner of the Year. The Board of Health unanimously agreed that Smith Acres Produce’s commitment to being the only local produce grower signed up to accept both WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons was well-deserving of recognition.
Health Commissioner Kate Siefert shared the sentiments expressed by the Board of Health regarding Smith Acres Produce. “Their hard work and willingness to apply to the state agencies to ensure they can accept both the WIC and Senior FMNP coupons provided access to fresh fruits and vegetables for many people in Crawford County that may not otherwise have been able to purchase those items. It is a win-win when local government and a local business can come together to create a solution that benefits everyone involved.” Heather Smith, owner of Smith Acres Produce, was honored to receive the recognition. “I’m grateful to be part of a collaborative effort that is committed to improving lives and creating healthier communities. Families, young and old, were able to enjoy the shopping experience of a farm market to take home locally grown produce and eat wonderfully nutritious foods.”
The Board of Health annually reviews collaborative activities Crawford County Public Health conducted with community partners during the previous calendar year to select a Public Health Partner of the Year. This is the seventh year of honoring a community partner for efforts that help Crawford County Public Health fulfill its mission to educate, empower, and improve the quality of life for the Crawford County Community. Previous recognition has been awarded to Sheriff Scott Kent (2018), Avita Health System (2019), Crawford County EMA (2020), the Bucyrus Public Library and the Crestline Public Library (2021), Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities (2022) and the Galion Community Theatre (2023).
