BUCYRUS—Bucyrus City Council met Tuesday evening in council chambers.

During the public participation portion of the meeting, Bucyrus resident Bob Taylor asked council if there were discussions going on to raise sewer rates. Councilmember Dan Wirebaugh confirmed that the discussions were in process. Wirebaugh also told council that the finance committee was concerned with the loss of revenue the city faces.
“This is a no-go for the taxpayers. We’re hurting too,” Taylor said.
Taylor told council: “Until you make some cuts from the top down, how can you have the audacity to ask people for more money given this economy?”
Taylor also told council that the policy that prevents persons from being armed if they possess a concealed carry permit needs to go.
Taylor pointed out that a few weeks ago, a man who drove by the Sheriff’s department and opened fire then sat outside the police department and confessed to Dispatchers. He pointed out that the dispatchers, often alone on duty, are unarmed.
“There’s no reason dispatchers should not be armed. There are no state laws preventing firearms in this building. That’s local policy,” Taylor said.

Bucyrus resident Vicki Dishon asked for clarification on a question she emailed to each council member more than three weeks ago, yet not one council member answered her email.
Dishon, a long experienced law clerk, pointed out that when council members approved DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area), they approved an application that wasn’t even in the packet for their review.
Councilman Kevin Myers explained that he did not answer Dishon because he wanted legal advice first that he was unable to obtain. Myers noted that council members had been reviewing the application for some time and that because he had been working on the application, he hadn’t noticed a missing copy.
The bigger point Dishon wanted to make was that if council is trying to limit or curtail public input by requiring citizens to email questions to council, that process is futile if they don’t respond.
In other Council business, it was noted that since Memorial Day is May 30th, there will be no trash pickup on that Monday. Persons who normally have trash pickup on Monday are asked to have it on the curb by 7 am on Tuesday the 31st.
The Aumiller Park Pool will open briefly on May 28-30th and then permanently on June 4th. The pool will be open daily from 1-7 pm. People interested in booking a pool party should call 419-562-7093.
