In 1946 Louis Jordan had the hit “Ain’t Nobody in Here but Us Chickens.” On Monday at the 2013 edition of the Crawford County Fair, it was a turkey that took home the title of grand champion of poultry.
Colton Guinther and his brother Weston took grand champion and reserve grand champion after the judging was done going up against fancy chickens, waterfowl, and other poultry.
Quinton Hiler explained the difference between the skillathon and the showmanship competitions.
“Well skill-athon is mostly a written test we take before the fair starts,” Hiler said. “It makes you memorize poultry breed parts of the chicken and everything just like that.”
Hiler continued, “Showmanship just how you handle the bird and how well you know the bird, it’s basically a mini interview in front of the judge.”
Emma Studer who took home first in Intermediate Skillathon for her White Mountain Broiler explained, “I studied a lot before I go through all my Skillathon stuff and make sure I know the parts of the bird, the breed the meat cuts. I study every possible question that I can for the interview.”
