CRESTLINE — About 500 adults and children made their way to Lowe-Volk Park in Leesville on Saturday for the annual Water Carnival.

“We hold this event every year. It’s an opportunity to get kids outside and connecting with nature while having a really fun time,” said Bill Fisher, director of the Crawford Park District.

Nicole Krieger brought her three kids to the event for the first time.

“We live in Shelby and recently started coming over here to the Nature Center. There are so many great things here for the kids to do and this is a fun way for them to cool off,” Krieger said as she watched her three-, six- and 10-year-old children participate in the many water games and activities throughout the park.

The Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department provided fire and water trucks for the event.

“We participate every year because it is a great way to meet the public and connect with the kids in a fun way,” Jefferson Township Firefighter Brian Knowlton said as water gushed from the water truck into a fill tank for kids to swim in.

For the second year in a row, Susan Hazlet brought her eight-year-old daughter, Isabelle, to the Water Carnival.

“There is a lot to do here but I like the water balls the best,” said Isabelle of the giant water balls that kids could climb inside and roll with across the pond.

The park’s newest naturalist, Abby Ditomassi, helped with the event for the first time.

“This is great for kids and their families. Some of the kids canoeing got to see from fresh water jelly fish,” Ditomassi said. “It is good for kids to learn about and connect with nature. We offer a ton of activities and events each year to educate kids on the environment around them in a fun and interesting way.”
