BUCYRUS—The COVID-19 pandemic may be casting a dark shadow over the Thanksgiving holiday this year, but several local residents have found things to be grateful for in spite of the negative things that have happened in 2020 and are looking forward to a better year ahead.

For Bucyrus resident Tom Zarcone, it was easy to come up with one thing he is grateful for that happened this year.

“After four years in kidney failure and requiring dialysis three times a week, I received a kidney transplant on Oct. 20,” said Zarcone.

April Rodgers Payne, who resides in Bucyrus with her family, may be quarantined with two of her three sons due to COVID, but she is still thankful.

“I’m thankful this Thanksgiving that my family has been lucky during the COVID pandemic and haven’t lost our jobs,” said Payne.

Mike Blum of Bucyrus said he is grateful that the business he started recently with his son allows him to help family and friends while making a living.

“I’m thankful because I’m still working while helping my friends and family by doing construction work for a cheap price and I’m doing really well. I am making people happy while me and my son are working together,” said Blum. “It is the greatest feeling ever. I am loving life and staying safe at the same time.”

Stephanee Borer recently moved from Bucyrus to Galion and is thankful this Thanksgiving for the new memories she has made over the past year.

“Through this whole COVID pandemic, I was able to make new memories. I met this amazing guy in February, just before this COVID hit. He is teaching me about life in general and how not to take things and people for granted,” said Borer.

She is counting her blessings including the little things in life that simply make you smile.

“Most importantly, I am thankful for how amazing God is and how much He loves each and every one of us,” said Borer.

She recently moved to a new town where she does not know very many people but is excited to see what 2021 brings.

“I am starting a new life with better opportunities,” said Borer. “Here is to 2021, a better year and more opportunities for an even better life.”
