The following is a letter submitted to Crawford County Now by Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser on the current work being done at the Aumiller Park Pool. The letter was published as submitted.
Long as I Remember the Rain Been Comin’ Down……..
….and I write this editorial during another thunderstorm! John Fogerty of Credence Clearwater Revival captured the feeling of all of us in Bucyrus and beyond. Rest assured that we are doing everything possible to open our pool after extensive repairs have been made. The pool is thirty years old and had extensive leaks in the bottom and upgrades were needed to the pumps and pool house. The City of Bucyrus awarded the contract to repair our pool on October 3, 2018 to Northwest Pools of Toledo (the sole bidder) after unanimous approval of the bond issuance by City Council last summer. The city pool is governed by the State Board of Health so all plans, inspections, corrections and final approval is governed by the Board. We can’t fix a pool as we would fix a broken water line or a pothole—there is a longer process to insure the work is done correctly and that the pool will be safe to use. Work began on the repairs during the winter months and the concrete base was removed in the spring. The rain kept on coming and Bucyrus has led the state in total rainfall in since April with the exception of one other city, Van Wert. It’s rained two out of three days this spring and rain is forecast nearly every day for the rest of the month. Work has continued during the rain but it has affected the timetable.
Northwest Pools will be using fast curing concrete for the base and then several days of dry weather are needed to paint the bottom. Rest assured that we are working diligently to insure a pool opening as soon as possible. Years of “band-aid” approaches to repairs needed to be addressed and the current repairs will save the taxpayers thousands of dollars and provide the community a pool that will last for many years.
