On Saturday, Sept. 2, the main drag in uptown Bucyrus will once again be bumper-to-bumper with cars, trucks, hotrods, SUV’s, and mini-vans as people take to the streets for the second official lap night since August. And this time, it is for an even better cause than just having a night of fun and laughs.

“This time, we are collecting cash donations on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the square during Bucyrus Laps Night to be turned in to Walmart,” Knickel said. “Walmart will then match what we collect times two then give all donations to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Harvey relief funds.”

For several years, lapping had stopped on Friday and Saturday nights but Knickel wanted to bring it back and it all started with a Facebook post.

“Someone posted last winter how we all used to take laps and a bunch of people said that it would be fun to do that again,” said Tammy Knickel.

Knickel took it upon herself to set up a meeting with Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser.

“He said it was a great idea but we needed a parade permit. So, I applied and the traffic committee approved,” Tammy said.

She, along with Brian Mollenkopf, Valerie Smith and Tim Bell, had been working together to create the First Annual 1980s Throwback Cruisin’ and Lap Night which was held on Aug. 5.

Knickel then went back to the Bucyrus City Council and received permission to hold another lap night Saturday evening.
