UPPER SANDUSKY – Every day is a Donut Day for Jeff Steen.
Steen is the owner of Glazed Over Donuts at 119 W. Johnson St., just a block from the Wyandot County Courthouse. A busy bakery that specializes in none other than good old-fashioned glazed donuts – and about 30 other mouth-watering varieties.
“I would put our donuts up against about any in the state,” said Steen, a 40-year employee of what he calls “corporate America” who left an IT project manager’s job at Nationwide Insurance in Columbus to open the bakery – and begin a new business venture.
The 1,200-square-foot pastry shop, formerly Dough Si Dough, also was Tasty Pastry at one time. It opened in June 2019, offering a variety of fresh yeast and cake donuts, all hand-rolled and hand-cut in small batches in the back, as well as pastries, brownies, cakes, and cookies.
Glazed donuts though are definitely the number-one seller, Steen said, followed by crème-filled sticks or Long Johns. But fried cinnamon rolls, cherry danishes, apple fritters, and turnovers are also popular, he said, along with croissant donuts, which recently made their debut.
Glazed Over, whose creative bakery team churns out more than 800 donuts on a typical Saturday morning, uses only the highest-quality ingredients in its products, including the filling and icing, Steen said, in order to “make each bit delicious.”
Two eight-foot long donut cases tempt customers who first walk into the pastry shop, which is decorated in warm turquoise, yellow and poppy shades. Counter seating and refurbished square tables are also available for those who want to grab a donut and dine in.
Glazed Over’s menu also features freshly brewed Crimson Cup Coffee, a Columbus-based company, in hot, cold and frozen varieties, along with fruit smoothies and “the best dang chocolate milk you’ve ever had” from Hartzler Dairy in Wooster.
Steen admitted that the bakery business took a slight hit earlier in the year due to the Coronavirus pandemic. “We kept going the whole time during the pandemic. We didn’t shut down at all. There were really only two bad weeks and then things picked up.”
Now, he said, Glazed Over is supplying donuts to two gas stations in town and drawing donut lovers not just from Wyandot County but also from Bucyrus and other nearby cities. “We seem to be getting out there,” he said. “We’re definitely growing.”
