GALION — Patrons to The Galion Community Theatre, during the next two weekends, will be immersed into one of the most classic battles between good and evil.

Jekyll and Hyde The Musical follows the storyline of the classic story written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Scott Smith as Dr. Jekyll (center, standing) addresses the St. Jude Hospital Board of Directors in Jekyll and Hyde The Musical.

“It basically follows the storyline of good versus evil and man wants to try to separate the evil to try to get rid of it,” show director Cheri Laughbaum said. “But, what’s interesting is, in the musical you get to know why he is so driven to do it.”

The show features 27 cast members who bring to life songs with a pop feel.

“The music is absolutely gorgeous,” Laughbaum said. “There are songs that you will leave here singing. They are fabulous.”

She added that the intricacy and difficulty in learning very involved music was possibly the hardest part of putting the production together.

“There is a lot of chorus interaction and it’s so cool and makes it pretty creepy,” Laughbaum said.

Laughbaum said doing a show that many people know the story of may be tricky, but she feels that her cast has made the characters their own.

Scott Smith as Dr. Jekyll (right) sings to his father portrayed by John Main in Jekyll and Hyde The Musical.

“It’s not as bad as say Young Frankenstein where we had to stay really close to the characters, because Gene Wilder is such an icon that you have to keep it true to the form,” Laughbaum said. “We’ve really been able to make it ours.”

Laughbaum said she hopes the audience has a mix of emotions leaving the theater.

“I think they are going to feel elated, but uncomfortable,” she said. “But I also think they are going to feel sorry for (Jekyll).

Those wishing to be taken on the emotional roller coaster may purchase tickets at the Galion Community Theatre website.

Performances are June 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. and July 1 at 2 p.m.
