Breathe in all that springtime goodness, Crawford County, because it’s time to get out and about. Check out what’s heading your way this month.

Easter Egg Hunt Outreach

The Bucyrus Church of God is looking to love on the people of the area, so it’s putting on an Easter egg hunt for kids ages one to 12. The church is going to scatter 3,500 eggs across Lions Park, split the kids up into three age groups and let them loose to collect eggs. Inside the eggs will be candy, tickets for small prizes, and toys. The kids will have to go a few blocks up to the Bucyrus Church of God (1304 Whetstone St.) to collect their prizes, but it’ll be worth it – grand prizes will include bicycles, basketballs, scooters, and gift cards.

Registration begins at one of the pavilions at Lions Park at 10 a.m. on April 1. The egg hunt will start at 11. Don’t forget to redeem your tickets at Bucyrus Church of God!

County Sports Hall of Fame Induction

We’ve had a lot of great athletes come out of this county, so it’s no wonder that we like to have them come back and give them a nice shiny plaque. That’s why the Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame has six of them stacked and ready to go for this year’s inductees.

The induction banquet will take place at 5 p.m. on April 1 at the Trillium Event Center, 1603 E. Southern Ave., Bucyrus. Tickets can be purchased at the six high school athletic departments in Crawford County, the Crestline Advocate, or by calling 419-571-6284.

We’d like to congratulate Mike Pensinger, Sarah Henize, Jody Grove, Ryan Hieber, Andy Roesch, and Tom Schreck on their inductions.

Covered Bridges of Ohio Art Show

Crawford County may be a desert for covered bridges (though neighboring Wyandot County has a few gems), but we’re pretty excited that Della Kaple is bringing us some artwork to showcase these old school marvels.

The Brush and Palette Art Gallery will be hosting the special ‘Covered Bridges of Ohio’ spotlight show this month. Kaple, a long-standing member of the Brush and Palette Art Club, will be the feature artist, though club charter member Muriel Grove will also have some of her paintings as part of the display.

The events kicks off with an open house from 2 – 4 p.m. on April 2 at the Art Gallery (114 Harding Way East – rear entrance, Galion). If you stop by, make sure to enter the door prize drawing for a covered bridges photography book. And if you miss out on the open house, don’t worry – the ‘Covered Bridges of Ohio’ exhibit will be on display throughout the month of April.

‘Alice in Wonderland Jr.’

We’re planning on going down the rabbit hole with Alice and the Galion High School Performing Arts – just let us grab our tea sets. If you want to join us, set aside April 7, 8, or 9 on your calendars and meet us at the Galion Community Theater.

It’s all hands on deck for Galion students at these performances with 23 students in grades eight through twelve acting as well as handling lighting, sound, and backstage along with serving as assistant directors.

Show times are 7 p.m. on April 7 and 8, and 2 p.m. on April 9. Doors open 45 minutes before each performance. Tickets are $10 and can be reserved by going to www.galiontheatre.org or calling Amy Jarvis at 419-563-5805.

We’re all a little mad here, so come along.

Arrowhead Hunt

The calendar finally turned to April, but, ugh, we still have to wait another week until the Crawford Park District’s Arrowhead Hunt. This waiting is brutal. Then again, we haven’t been sitting in a field for hundreds of years waiting for someone to pick us up again. That’s deep, bro.

And now that we’ve probably freaked you all out with our hippy dippy ways, let’s talk arrowhead hunts. The Arrowhead/Artifact Hunt is one of our favorite events put on by the Crawford Park District every year. Thanks to the generosity of area farmers, you’ll get to walk fields for flint and stone remnants of prehistoric cultures who inhabited Crawford County.

Imagine . . . walking the fields hour after hour, only to stop to talk to a fellow hunter, look down, and spot a pristine arrowhead nestled among clumps of dirt between your feet. (Hey! It happened and we have the picture and story to prove it!)

It’s moments like that why we love the Arrowhead Hunt. So – this is a suggestion, but we think you’ll enjoy it – meet up at Lowe-Volk Park (2401 Ohio 598) at 10 a.m. on April 8. Make sure to dress for the weather (this includes boots in case of wet ground). Walking sticks, small digging tools, and buckets can also be helpful.

Hi-Tech Easter Egg Hunt

Look, if you’re going to be hunting for Easter eggs at the Park District, they’re going to make it fun and educational. And let us tell you, the Hi-Tech Easter Egg Hunt is a whole lot of fun.

Photo: Crawford County Now

Kids, convince your parents to take you to Lowe-Volk Park at 1 p.m. on April 9. You get to hunt for Easter eggs with GPS! C’mon, how awesome is that?! Um, we do have to tell you that you’ll use the GPS to find the eggs, but then you’ll have to answer a nature-based question. Of course, you’ll get a prize so get your nature quiz game on!

Crawford County Partnership State of the Vision

The year 2020 is moving closer and closer, so we’re glad The Crawford Partnership is keeping its finger on the pulse of the county and how it matches up against the Crawford: 20/20 Vision. A State of the Vision address will take place on April 18 at Pickwick Place (1875 N. Sandusky Ave., Bucyrus). Doors open at 5 p.m. with the program following at 6.

Happy birthday, Sandy!

We’re slipping this one in here just because we can (also, Gary Ogle won’t know until he reads this :p). On April 21, it’ll be Sandy Ogle’s birthday. Happy birthday to Gary’s one-and-only!

Crawford County track meet

Hurdles? Check. Long jump pit smoothed out? Check. Pole vault ready to go? Yep. All we’re waiting on is the county teams! The county

track meet is always a fun event (and we’re not just saying that because we love all things centered on Crawford County). Wherever the event is held, it’s always packed – plus, winners get to stand on the podium at the end and the top schools get a giant trophy. Who doesn’t love a giant trophy? The county track meet has an event for everyone and always brings out a great competitive spirit in the student-athletes.

Head over to Wynford this year on April 21.  Start time is 4 p.m.

Community Garage Sale

This one is for all you garage sale fanatics out there. The Kiwanis Community Garage Sale and Flea Market is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 22 at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. The Bucyrus Kiwanis Club revived the event in 2014 and proceeds from the event are used to support the club’s various charities, such as Buckeye Girls State, Bucyrus Little League, the annual Fourth of July fireworks show, and the Santa Parade.

Earth Day Fair

Let’s celebrate Earth Day! The Park District is hosting an Earth Day Fair from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on April 22. The focus of the fair is to get people thinking about the 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, c’mon people!) and sustainability, creating a backyard habitat, and more.

A variety of local organizations – Crawford County Solid Waste District, ODNR Scenic Rivers Program, the Sandusky River Watershed Coalition – will have table displays and activities. You can expect a composting demo from the Soil and Water Conservation District, a native plant sale, a recycled nature craft, a natural pesticides display, and ‘mud play.’

Get there early because the Park District will be giving away milkweed plants to the first 100 visitors. Lowe-Volk Park is located at 2401 Ohio 598, Crestline.
